A Word from Our Children
about the Elevette:

Extending God's Welcome

A central element of our planned capital improvements is replacement of the "Elevette," a residential elevator installed in the Parish House decades ago, with a new commercial elevator. We wish our facilities to extend God's welcome to all comers!

As anyone who has used it knows first-hand, the Elevette has numerous limitations. For one, its reach extends only from the basement fellowship hall to the first floor parlor. It does not run to the education and administrative offices; to the second floor, where the secretary's office, the pastor's office, counseling services, the choir room, and the nursery are found; or to the third floor. Those with physical limitations now find it difficult or impossible to go to these locations.

For another, the Elevette is quite small. Many modern wheelchairs and motorized scooters simply will not fit into it.

For a third, the Elevette has severe weight restrictions. It is designed to carry no more than 350 pounds. This eliminates the possibility of a companion riding with a wheelchair-bound person (even if there were enough space).

Also, as our video illustrates, the Elevette is complicated to operate. Note that several of the sixteen steps required are difficult, if not impossible for many of the handicapped.

Finally, the Elevette is unreliable. Many have found themselves caught between landings or sent (like the children) to the wrong floor.

It is definitely time for improvements!

Our Plans. The new elevator will be larger, of adequate capacity, and will serve all but the sanctuary level. Access to the sanctuary will be provided by a lift at the Fayette Street entrance. (A lift is less expensive than providing a third door on the elevator car.)

Installation of the elevator will be in a new shaft, to be located a few feet east of where the Elevette's shaft is situated. Installation of this new shaft will require relocation of some of the church's office space.

As followers of Christ, we have the privilege of representing God to our community, of illustrating God's welcome through our actions.

God, what would you do through me to accomplish your will in my church?
